You know how sometimes you get a piece of gear and it just becomes your go-to? That’s this panel for me. I’ve been messing with solar for years, way back when panels were crazy expensive and you had to treat them like eggshells. Things are better now but you still get plenty of junk. Stuff that cracks, stuff that doesn’t put out what it says, stuff that dies after a year. So when we started making our own at Shenzhen Shine Solar I was pretty insistent we do it right. First thing you notice is the glass. It’s tempered, which is just a fancy way of saying they heat it up and cool it down special so it’s way tougher than regular glass. I’ve seen these things take hits that would shatter a normal panel. One guy in Oklahoma had a walnut fall out of a tree onto his, sounded like a gunshot, but the panel was fine. Another customer in Spain had his mounted on a barn roof and a tile came loose and slid down onto it. Scratched the frame a little but the glass didn’t even crack. Under the glass are the cells, monocrystalline silicon. There’s newer stuff out there but monocrystalline is proven, it’s been around forever and it just works. What I really like about it is how it does in crappy light. You know, cloudy days, early morning, late afternoon when the sun’s going down. Cheaper panels just give up but these cells keep pushing out power. I tested one last month on a rainy day here, just out of curiosity, and it was still putting out 28 watts. For a 65W small solar panel that’s the difference between keeping your battery alive or coming back to a dead system.
The frame is aluminum with this anodized coating that stops rust. I’ve left panels outside for years, through rain and snow and blazing sun, and the frames still look fine. No pitting, no corrosion. The frame has holes pre-drilled in the back so you can mount it with standard brackets but honestly you don’t even need brackets if you’re handy. One guy in Vermont bolted his right to the side of his hunting cabin with some lag screws from the hardware store. Another in Australia built a little wooden stand with hinges so he could tilt it through the day. The holes are there if you want them but you’re not stuck with any one way to do it.
Flip it over and there’s the junction box. It’s rated IP65 which means dust doesn’t get in and water sprayed from any direction won’t hurt it. I wouldn’t drop it in a lake but rain is fine, hosing it off to clean it is fine. I’ve had panels out in monsoon weather here, weeks of solid rain, and they kept working. The cables come out with MC4 connectors already on them. If you’ve ever wired up solar you know MC4s are what everyone uses. They click together, they’re weatherproof, you can get adapters anywhere. No soldering, no special tools, just plug them in and you’re done. That matters when you’re setting up a 65W miniature solar panel somewhere remote and you don’t have a workshop full of gear.
So what does 65 watts actually get you? Under good sun you’ll see around 3.5 to 4 amps at 12 volts. That’s enough to keep a battery topped off, run a small fridge for a few hours, power LED lights all night. I’ve got a buddy who uses two of these on his boat in the Caribbean, runs his laptop and a fan and even a little water maker off his batteries. Another customer in Nigeria uses them to keep vaccine fridges running in rural clinics where the power grid is a joke. That’s real world stuff, not marketing.
Where People Actually Use These Things
